Starboard Classic at Hallidays Pt great for suntanning
After some great wave-sailing at Hallidays on the Saturday this time last year (‘barrels of doom’ for some), fantastic surfing on the Sunday, and general all-round good fun, the NSWWA sailors were fully geared up for similar action in the 2nd round of the 2005 series. Alas, it was not to be, as for all of the long weekend we were greeted with light winds and poxy surf. A few desperados made their way out into the ‘break’ on Saturday afternoon, mainly because their sponsors had fronted up with the new seasons’ gear, and they were keen to try it out. Dean Hendrie stood out as one of the few to get going with any consistency – his newly shaven head clearly giving him an aerodynamic edge for extreme light-wind planing.
Some went for a surf in the mornings, followed by touch footy on the beach (that seemed to require more exertion than sailing would have). Others started an impromptu game of softball that was popular with the kids and competitive big kids (Ollie). But mainly we all lazed around on the beach or in the carpark, spouting various theories about how and when the seabreeze would kick in.
Saturday night saw the prizegiving for the Birubi comp; congratulations to Dan Berry, the Opens winner, and to all the others who were in amongst the podium places. The free BBQ and beers cranked up again for the enjoyment of all. Sunday night was spent at the Hallidays Pt Bowling Club, watching the rugby league grand final, with all present conducting themselves impeccably.
And so the calm, flat weather and surf continued into Monday, with certain sailors measuring wave height and wind speed right up until 1:30 pm, in the hope of running the comp. However it was all to no avail, as the breeze died, and the most dangerous thing about the surf was tripping over in the sand while walking towards it.

Comp canned, no result. See you all at Gerroa on 19 - 20 November for what is sure to be a HUGE event!
