We kicked off at Gerroa on the Saturday sending the Super Groms (less than 15 years old) out first as the South Wester picked up and they all did incredibly well in some very trying conditions with flukey offshore gusts being hard enough for the adults to sail in let alone these gutsy kids. Jake Juretic (11 years old) wowed the crowd with some great sailing which at one point drew a huge cheer from the on lookers as he bust through a good size wave. His sister Jess Juretic (13 years old) was going well zipping in and out using her harness effectively. Jessica Holder (14 years old) demonstrated some stylish sailing (takes after her father!) and Alex Lueck (11 years old) did very well without foot straps and he pulled off some nice tacks on the outside. Ellie Jacobs (12 years old) demonstrated her determination doing well in very hard conditions. The winner though was Forrest Ladkin (15 years old) who sailed consistently all the heat and managed to finish with a nice wave ride to clinch the top spot from Jake. WELL DONE all Super Groms – RESPECT.
The rest of the day was a “free for all” expression session with the stand out being Alexandre Rouys doing some amazing freestyle whilst hanging off the longest harness lines we have seen - 36 inches (we didn’t know they were made that long!) We all came off the water tired and shot as a whale passed by 400 meters out to sea breaching maybe 10 times – happy days.
A HUGE thanks goes to our sponsors Windsurf ‘n’ Snow for providing excellent prizes and it was really good to see Forrest pick up a Neil Pryde boom, Jake a Sailworks boom and Jess Holder a harness. As always, everyone came away with a prize and loads of free liquid and great tucker prepared by the President and chef extraordinaire - Rhys Herbert – thanks mate.
Sunday morning we rose with a good Fishoes head buzz before heading to Windang ready to enjoy a great South Wester forecast and my did it kick in with some of the best in NSW busting out all the moves with tidy forwards, back loops and even fruit loop attempts (from Alexandre). The wind petered out by 4pm BUT we managed to get a full set of results in.
Until next time at Wanda.
